Christina Francheshi Named a 2013 NYSW Coach of the Year

Buffalo Soccer Club is proud to announce that Christina Francheshi, a third year coach with the program, has been named the 2013 US Youth Soccer Region 1 and New York State West Youth Soccer Boys Recreation Coach of the Year.

Christina has worked with Buffalo Soccer Club (BSC) as an intern, head coach, and Soccer For Success coach and has worked with over 100 players during her time with BSC. While Christina has worked with numerous players during her BSC tenure, her work with the young men at Public School 6 stands out as exemplary. Christina spent the year working with these young men, a group composed mainly of students from refugee families who’ve recently moved to the Buffalo area. During her time with these young men, she earned their respect and helped them work on their English language skills while playing soccer. At the end of the season, Christina had the school district’s varsity soccer coaches attend practices and observe her players, which resulted in seven of her athletes making the varsity teams at the high schools they would attend in the fall.

“At Buffalo Soccer Club, we strongly believe that, by playing on varsity teams, these young men will be more likely to stay in, and graduate from, high school, gaining skills and educational experiences that will foster positive contributions to our community,” said BSC’s Executive Director, Anna-Lesa Calvert. “Christina consistently goes above and beyond, arranging for opportunities like this for her players.”

“Christina is a remarkable young woman who has the passion and ability to take a player of any level to the next, all while providing them with confidence on the field that can easily be applied to other areas of their lives,” continued Calvert. “I’ve dealt with many young coaches in the Buffalo area through our program at BSC, but I hold very few with the level of regard that I have for Christina.”

The US Youth Soccer Region 1 and New York State West Youth Soccer Recreation Boys Coach of the Year is awarded to a recreation coach for his or her coaching activities, sportsmanship, player development, personal coaching development, and citizenship. Regional winners advance to the National level and the National Boys and Girls Recreation Coach of the Year is announced at the US Youth Soccer Awards Gala, as a part of the US Youth Soccer Workshop.

About Buffalo Soccer Club - Buffalo Soccer Club, the pilot program of Algonquin Sports for Kids, offers soccer-related activities including after-school activities, house leagues, and travel teams to children living in the City of Buffalo. From the game, it is BSC’s hope that these children develop good physical health, positive levels of self-esteem, confidence, and core ethical principles in a safe, fun environment. BSC offers programming for young boys and girls ranging from four to 14 years old.

About New York State West Soccer - The New York State West Youth Soccer Association (NYSWYSA) is the parent organization for over two hundred affiliated clubs and leagues in Western New York State. NYSWYSA is affiliated with US Youth Soccer, the United States Soccer Federation (USSF), and the Federation de International Football Association (FIFA). NYSWYSA includes all New York State counties to the west and on Interstate Rt. 81. This area is broken up into districts, each of which is managed by separate commissioners.

About US Youth Soccer Region 1 - US Youth Soccer Region I covers the northeastern United States.  US Youth Soccer is a member of the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) Youth Council, the governing body for soccer in the United States. US Youth Soccer is a national organization of more than 3 million registered youth soccer players between the ages of 5 and 19, more than 600,000 volunteers and administrators, and more than 300,000 dedicated coaches, most of whom also are volunteers.

The US Youth Soccer membership is divided into four regions, each with a Director elected to the board. The regions are essentially East (Region I), Midwest (Region II), South (Region III) and West (Region IV). Within each region are State Associations, 12 to 15 each depending on the region.
