About Soccer for Success

Soccer for Success is the U.S. Soccer Foundation’s innovative youth development program that uses soccer as a tool to combat childhood obesity and promote healthy lifestyles for children in low-income urban communities. The U.S. Soccer Foundation has partnered with Buffalo Soccer Club through a collaboration with Independent Health Foundation and the United Way of Buffalo and Erie County to operate Soccer for Success sites — providing thousands of children with free after-school programming three days a week.

Soccer for Success was run in 300 different program sites operated by 22 different organizations in 20 different cities during the 2012-2013 program year. Our 2012 evaluation data revealed:

  • 80% of participants enrolled during the 2012-2013 Soccer for Success season improved or maintained their Aerobic Capacity.
  • 77% of participants enrolled during the 2012-2013 Soccer for Success season improved or maintained their BMI Percentile.
  • 74% of participants enrolled during the 2012-2013 Soccer for Success season decreased of maintained their waist circumference size.
  • As suggested by a nutrition and youth development survey, participants in Soccer for Success statistically improved their healthy eating behavior and nutrition knowledge.

Soccer For Success is running throughout the country. You can learn more about how Soccer for Success is working in the South Bronx in New York City and in Los Angles, California!
